These are some of the options that the retailer may offer:
Interest free payment deferred purchase
Sometimes referred to as 'Buy Now Pay Later'. You are not required to make a payment for a specified period of time, usually 6 to 12 months. Also, the purchase does not attract any interest during that time2. Purchase a single high priced item, or a collection of lower priced items; but naturally, you must spend at least the store’s minimum purchase amount and you must do so during the one store visit. Before your interest free period expires, you can choose to pay off your account in full, in which case, no interest will be charged. Or you can begin monthly payments that will include interest on the outstanding balance from the day after your interest free period ends.
Interest free promotion
These purchase options differ to the Interest Free Payment Deferred purchase in that a minimum monthly repayment is required, either 3% of the outstanding balance of your account or $25 - whichever is greater3 (plus any overdue payments, over limit amounts and fees).
Combined promotion
This is effectively a combination of the above promotional types. That is, you may make an Interest Free Payment Deferred purchase with the payments deferred for 6 months for example, after which you may have another 6 months where payments are required, but without interest being charged for the whole 12 month period.
Instalment interest bearing promotion
Sometimes referred to as 'Own-It-Now'. The benefit of this promotional type is that your repayments are spread over the promotional term into equal monthly instalments, including the interest component. The interest rate on instalments during the promotional period is at a special lower rate than the account rate. If there is a balance outstanding after the promotional period (eg you have missed a payment), then interest is charged at the prevailing account rate. You can take advantage of these promotional purchases from thousands of retailers across the country - for the list of retailers click here.
